Latimer: It’s that season again… cherry blossoms blowing in the breeze! Ah I love it so! Also a chance to try out some watercolours!

Ridley: Latimer and I decided to enter Neil Gaiman’s Calendar of Tales (the man is an absolute Legend!), basically he’s written twelve stories-one for each month, hence the name! Here’s my picture that I drew for the story from October and Latimer created one for Neil’s tale for June. The stories can be downloaded here and the other fantastic entries came be seen there too! It was really a lot of fun to do, it kept us distracted for weeks wondering which tale to choose and it was brilliant to see each other’s interpretation of the tales!

02nd February 2013
It’s been a long time since we posted up Artwork! Here’s some of our recent bits and bobs!

Latimer: Fan art of Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare!
Gosh I love this series (it’s one of our faves!)

Latimer: Nobody Owens falling through the Ghoul Gate (he’s from Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book). Been meaning to read it for years.. it was great, really enjoyed it!

Latimer: Fan art of Hiccup and Astrid from How to Train your Dragon!! I watched this movie over Christmas – just really enjoyable!! 🙂

Ridley: A quick sketch of a dragon, I finished the book, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman. An absolutely brilliant read, definitely grab a copy if you like your fantasy, especially with dragons!

Latimer and Ridley have severely injured their fingers working on their Wacom Bamboo tablets to make the cover for their up-coming free short story Temperance 🙂
Hope you guys like it! It’s coming soon!

A little image of Latimer and Ridley off on their blog tour!! HUZZAH!

27th October 2012
Latimer: Just a little image to mark the release of Legend Unleashed. Myself and Ridley look a bit bedraggled.
Media: Pens, Pencils and Copic Markers and modified in powerpoint 🙂

Ariel the Little Mermaid
20th September 2012
Ridley: I’m a massive fan of Glen Keane, he’s the genius behind the fantastically drawn characters from Little Mermaid, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, so I had a go at drawing Ariel, she’s one of my favourite Disney heroines. In this image, she’s fairly sad looking as it’s after she’s lost her voice! 🙂
Medium: Pencil and pen in the first image, then I scanned it into the computer and used Paint Sai to colour her in.

Power: it’s all in the eyes
04th September 2012
Latimer: this is just a reproduction of a picture by the fantastic Gabriel Moreno.
Media: pencils (3B and 2B)
Reason: Orbie (our friend) bought the recent edition of Illustration now. This image is on the cover. I’ve been staring at it on the coffee table for weeks now. I decided to draw it one night while watching tv. I don’t generally draw real people because I’m afraid to, but this was just great fun. It’s such a cool image.

Be careful Who you play games with
06th August 2012
Latimer: This is a drawing of two characters from our book, ‘Legend Unleashed’.
The girl is the main character, Temperance Levinthal.
This is a meeting with the mysterious werewolf Halvard Wolfram.
The quote is from the book.
Media: pens, pencils and coloured using a Wacom Bamboo tablet and Paint computer program.

I’m Alastair Byron
29th July 2012
Latimer: Just having a bit of fun doing fanart for our book 🙂
The guy is Alastair Byron, the girl is Temperance Levinthal.
The quote is from the book (Legend Unleashed).
Media: pens, pencils and coloured using a Wacom Bamboo tablet and paint computer program (a first for me!!)

We are Made of Star Stuff
28th July 2012
Latimer: This piece was inspired by my love of Astrophysics… The quote ‘we are made of star stuff’ is from Carl Sagan, one of the great Astrophysicists.
Media: Copic Markers, paint computer program, pens and pencils
Reason: this is just a topic that I love and amazes me- so this is me looking amazed!

We could Have Had it All
18th July 2012
Latimer: the girls pose and style was taken from an anime model I saw a pic of. I did the face myself. Can’t for the life of me remember what the model was from. So forgiveness for that! The words are from Rollin in the Deep (Adele).
Media: pens, pencils and colouring pencils
Reason: the words of the song inspired the picture. I think her pose seemed to mirror the words?

If I had a Boat
16th July 2012
Latimer: this is a small drawing of Gale and Katniss from the Hunger Games. Basically it’s Gale thinking if he had a boat he’d sail to Katniss.
Media: Pens, pencils and colouring pencils
Reason: I felt bad for Gale, it’s like he and Katniss were never going to be together after the games started (hence her in the reaping dress. The whole picture was inspired by a song by James Vincent McMorrow, which I thought was like a Gale theme song

Spitting on the Street
28th June 2012
Latimer: This is just a silly poem inspired by, well, people ‘gobbin’ on the street in Dublin! It makes my blood boil (in Tuberculosis times you’d get fined for that!).
’Gobbing’ is to hack snot and spit in out (people seem to do this on the street! why?!). I actually saw a man, almost trippin over himself in an effort to gob on the street (and he became the inspiration for my poem… that’s me there, horrified).
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: a need to vent my horror!

Child of a Supernova
28th June 2012
Latimer: a while ago I was watching lots of programs about the universe… and there was some amazing, inspirational photos of nebulas (nebuli?) and distant planets etc. One of the programs said that we’re all made up of heavy elements (eg iron) that were created in the heart of an exploding star (so we are actually all the children of a supernova).
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: awed at being the product of a supernova!

Gothic Alice in Wonderland
28th June 2012
Latimer: I have an obsession with Alice in wonderland. I love that there’s a slight gothic element to the story. I took the pose of the girl in the picture from an Alice cosplayer. The quote is taken from the book (it says: if I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t.)
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: I love Alice in wonderland.

Halfway Down the Stairs
28th June 2012
Latimer: This was reproduced from a cover of the manga Kuroshitsuji by Yana Toboso (her style is incredible). The character’s name is Doll. The words are taken from the poem Halfway down the stairs by A.A Milne (wrote Winnie the Pooh).
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: It’s just such a lovely picture and I felt that the poem suited it.

Chibi Girl on Fire
28th June 2012
Latimer: My chibi take on Peeta and Katniss from Hunger Games-Girl on Fire, Boy with Extinguisher.
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: a need to draw a chibi Peeta and Katniss…

Green Mim Corps
28th June 2012
Latimer: my niece gave me the idea for these two characters- Mim-Mim and Kos. Their adventures are as of yet, unknown. At the moment I just draw them in random ways! I always view Mim-Mim as being mean to Kos (and Kos taking the mean, cos he’s a sweet bat-rat thing).
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: My brother asked for DC superhero-inspired Mim-Mim and Kos pics, so I started with Green Lantern Corps… I wanted to draw Mim-Mim as a Yellow Lantern (basically Sinestro).. But I decided to stick with green and make Kos the battery, bless him and his fat head!

Mim-Mim and Kos in Game of Thrones
28th June 2012
Latimer: This is Mim-Mim sitting on the Iron Throne, with Kos wearing King Robert’s (the first of his damn name!) stag inspired crown! In this game, you win or you die! Kos is looking pretty angry in this one!
Media: pencils, pens and colouring pencils
Reason: I wanted to draw Mim-Mim and Kos in Game of Thrones (fyi the Iron Throne is a pain to draw! But I am very impressed by all those swords… what a great throne, if I was Queen of the world, I would have a throne like it… one day, one day…)

Ridley: an update of my Squirrelled Away pictures, this is Barnsby! And below is a second image from the book!

Squirrelled Away Picture Book
11th June 2012
Ridley: If I wasn’t already busy enough with posting on our blog, tweeting, emailing, writing, editing, working, studying, meeting friends, eating and sleeping, I’m also doing a children’s picture book course, just for the fun of it! My story is about a squirrel, obviously, his name is Barnsby!
The course is nearly over, it ran for about 6 months and D-day is fast approaching where we’ll be expected to have a dummy book done. Not only that we’ve to do two specific images from our books for a small exhibition in Dublin. I was always a bit of a crammer, leaving things to the last minute, I don’t know why-perhaps I like the adrenaline rush that comes from the panicking? I certainly don’t like the heartburn! Anywho, here’s my first image that I was considering for the showing. I’m trying different media-pen, inks, acrylics to see which ones I prefer for it. This is pen. And unfortunately the shading is much too dark in the first picture. So I’ve had to start again. The third picture is from the book itself. It’s been a fun course, if a little stressful!

The New M.Latimer-Ridley Logo
2nd April 2012
This is just another attempt at the logo. Will it stay like this? For now anyways.

Old M. Latimer-Ridley logo

Bit harsh looking and doesn’t really represent us well. But it was an attempt all the same. And fun to make!

Book Cover: Not an Option, Number 1!
24th February 2012
Here are the first failed attempts at the book cover! Much too dark and not at all the look I was trying for. I stopped working on it half way through. The bottom would have had the writing, that’s why it’s so black.

Pooh! I just lost the reply I was posting….
Thx for liking my post. More thanks for your site. It’s got a nice quirk to it – not overpowering, not exclusively Irish. Gentle.
I’m not into anime or Manga but, like you, I’m into good stories.
I love your illustrations. For me, whimsical yet grounded. I want to dig under the snow, be on the other side of the windows, know what’s lurking/hiding behind the trees. Pictures can tell and invite a lot of story. Would seem to me you have the knack for that.
There’s a wonderful ‘kids’ picture book The Great Bear by Australian Author, Libby Gleeson. It’s a touching, tragic story. Initially, it had text on every page, but Libby and the artist, Greder, had worked on books together before. This time they met. They agreed the book should be published in what is its final form – no text in the last half. Good decision, it was awarded the Bologna Ragazzi in 2000. Pretty prestigious. Check it out.
I write with lots of words – I can’t draw. The closest I come to is photography, which you can see on my author site: http://www.kristalmiu.com.
That’s where you also see my love of dogs. My reading dog sadly died late last year. My other dog still refuses to garden!
We agree on sharing advantage, and seeing your charities up prompts me to stop dithering and put mine up. ‘Girls (I am assuming you are way younger than me), you’ve got heart. I won’t follow cause I never manage to read anything. I’ll be back to see more of your words, but I reckin you could tell great stories with pics too..
Bless,
KMY
Thanks so much for this lovely message! I just popped over to your website, there’s so much there it’s great! Thanks for sharing your work with us readers!
Pooh! I just lost the reply I was posting…. twice – I’m new at this!

If not, trust it, they’ll come.

WONDERFUL! Your artwork and you writing. GO YOUTH !!!!!!
Oh thank you so much!!! Your work is beautiful June, we wandered through your blog and site, that picture ‘Light’s Golden Hour’ is lovely!!
Now my time to thank you! I will be keeping up with your blog.
Great artwork! 😀
Thank you so much!! 🙂
I love your art work! I also love that you say you use pens and pencils – so do I but I don’t how to do all the impressive stuff like modify the drawings on the comp. You say some of them are done through powerpoint – is this easy to do? 🙂
Thank you Kate!! I love reading about Cyril and Willy – pencils and pens rock!! Powerpoint is very easy to use for modifying pictures – you can put boarders on pictures and add in some shapes, text and combine images – if you scan your picture and copy and paste to powerpoint (it’s very easy to use :)).
My recent wanderings around deviantart have made me think about trying digital art – though I’m still a pens and pencils girl really!
I tried using Corel Painter 12 (you can download a free trial) – it’s some fun to use if want to try it out! I find it a bit overwhelming, but I’m thinking of persevering somehow! (there’s some tutorial videos on youtube that make it look so cool if it can be figured out!!)
I would love to post your image of Clary Fray on my blog, complete with a credit to you and link to your site. Is this okay?
gosh glad you like it angela! thank u so much! that would be okay with us! drop us a link we’d love to check out your blog 🙂
